2025: The Summer of ?

2025: The Summer of ?

Every summer has a vibe. A name. A shared moodboard.

It started in 2019 with Hot Girl Summer, coined by Megan Thee Stallion and backed by a generation ready to thrive. It was bold, unbothered, and built for being outside. The mood was lip gloss and main character energy.

By 2021, we shifted into Coastal Grandma Summer. Think Nancy Meyers aesthetics, beach walks, and breezy linen. It was soft-life coded, a romanticized escape from post-lockdown burnout. Less rage, more rosé.

In 2022, we got Tomato Girl Summer — the Mediterranean-core takeover. It was all about red cheeks, redder pasta sauce, and a passport fantasy you could fake on Instagram. Everyone looked like they were vacationing in Capri, even if they were just at Erewhon.

Then came 2023, aka Barbenheimer Summer. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer dropped the same weekend and culture exploded. It was absurd. It was perfect. One half glitter and existentialism, the other half nuclear dread and Cillian Murphy cheekbones. Duality, baby.

And in 2024, we got Brat Summer. Born from Charli XCX’s BRAT album and her full takeover of the internet. The vibe was intentionally messy. Club bathroom selfies, lime green graphics, bratty captions, and pop star delusion. It was a little toxic, very online, and fully in on the bit.

Now it’s 2025, and while the world’s still spinning, the girlies are laying down. Literally.

Because this year? It’s the Summer of Bed Rot.

And while everyone keeps saying “summer’s flying by,” we’re here to say: it’s not over — it’s just gotten cozy.

So let’s get into it.

Brat Summer Walked so Bed Rot Summer Could Power Nap

This year’s summer trend isn’t a color palette or a vacation destination. It’s a position. Horizontal.

Welcome to Bed Rot Summer. The dress code is pajama bottoms, the vibe is unbothered, and the only plans are canceling plans. The girlies are still romanticizing their lives, just… from under a weighted and heated blankets.

What started as TikTok speak for “I’m not getting out of bed today” has evolved into something bigger. It’s not about being depressed and inactive (though, sure, mental health is part of the conversation). Now it’s about rest as resistance. Quiet quitting, but make it plush.

People aren’t lazy. They’re tired. Emotionally, physically, chronically online. Gen Z isn’t trying to hustle harder. They’re trying to protect their peace and maybe watch six straight hours of reality TV while they do it (we’re looking at you Love Island).

Even the numbers agree. According to an Amerisleep survey, Gen Z spends around 498 hours a year just lounging in bed. That’s 21 days. Three full weeks of just… laying there. And honestly? Respect.

Bedtime stories, brought to you by brands

Like any trend worth following, the culture caught on, and the brands followed. Because nothing says “we get you” like packaging self-preservation in a sleep mask and a snack box.

Some of the standouts:

Ikea hosted the world’s largest pajama party at their Sweden HQ, and this year, they took it even further with a private Sleepeasy event in LA. Custom-embroidered sleep masks, cozy bedroom setups, and nostalgic snacks.

Paige DeSorbo (from Giggly Squad and Summer House) launched a pajama line at the exact moment the internet collectively agreed to stop going out.

Pajamas as outerwear? Yeah. We’re doing that again.

Bed Rot Summer isn’t Lazy, it’s Intentional

The difference this year is that “doing nothing” has been rebranded as “doing something for yourself.” Not going out? That’s financial wellness. Sleeping in? That’s circadian alignment. Watching Love Island with a face mask on? That’s emotional support.

This is wellness, but unserious. It’s cozy-core. It’s what happens when burnout culture gets too loud and the only real rebellion left is staying in.

So while other summers wanted you to be “that girl,” this one just wants you to be that girl who’s tired and fine with it.
