HBO Max, Max, and Back Again

Max is dead. Long live HBO Max. Again.
If you’ve ever stared at your streaming app and wondered, “Wait… what’s Max again?” no, you’re not losing it. You’ve just been caught in Warner Bros. Discovery’s ongoing identity crisis.
After two years of trying to make “Max” happen, they’re crawling back to their ex. HBO Max is back this summer, and this rebrand has all the chaotic energy of a 2 a.m. “you up?” text.

A Brief History of The HBO Streaming Brand
Let’s rewind.
- 2010: HBO Go drops for cable subscribers
- 2015: HBO Now launches for the cord-cutters
- 2020: HBO Max arrives, combining both into a one-stop shop for HBO + Warner Bros. + more
Then came the chaos.
In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery dropped the “HBO” and tried to go full ✨general audience✨ with just Max. The idea? Make it feel less prestigious, more family-friendly. Because apparently “HBO” was… too iconic?
The Great Return Back (HBO Max)
Now, in May 2025, they’re admitting what we all knew: the HBO brand actually mattered. It had the weight and the brand identity viewers needed to stay active.
At this year’s WBD Upfront, exec Casey Bloys got literal laughs and applause when he announced HBO Max’s comeback, saying:
“The good news is I have a drawer full of stationery from the last round. So I’m all set.”
The internet immediately got in on the joke:

Why the Change?
The move to “Max” was meant to widen the appeal. Think: more Scooby-Doo and Shark Week, less Succession. But it didn’t land.
“Max” felt generic and forgettable, especially next to titles like The Last of Us, Euphoria, and The White Lotus, which were still being labeled “HBO Originals.”
Now, WBD says this rebrand will “amplify the uniqueness” of the platform. Translation: that three-letter name still means something.
What About Discovery+?
Still around, technically, but not the focus. The app will continue housing HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, and Discovery content all in one place, just under the HBO Max label again.
The bigger question? Will the tech work. The original “Max” rollout was… buggy. Navigation was clunky, content was buried, and the rebrand itself confused millions. This is a shot at redemption — that is if they get the UX right.
Pricing
So far, no major price hikes tied to the rebrand. The pricing structure remains the same, which feels intentional. After the bumpy Max rollout, WBD seems focused on stability and familiarity, at least on the surface. They’re betting that bringing back the HBO name, without complicating things further, will smooth over the chaos and win back trust.
- Ad-supported: $9.99/month
- Ad-free: $16.99/month
- Ultimate ad-free: $20.99/month
WBD says Same app. New-ish name — Translation Ignore the mess, we fixed the label.
Keeping the pricing untouched also helps maintain trust. With the platform’s identity changing again. It signals that the focus is on clarity, not complexity.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just a name change, it’s a brand correction.
HBO has always stood for something. It revolutionized TV with The Sopranos, The Wire, and later Succession and The Last of Us. Even during the “Max” years, viewers never stopped calling it “HBO.”
Now the company is embracing that legacy.
And honestly? It’s kind of refreshing to see a brand admit they got it wrong and pivot back.
In an era where everyone is rebranding (hi, Meta and X), HBO Max returning feels less like another identity crisis, and more like a long-overdue course correction.
